Our Philosophy

GMRC is grounded in compassion, empathy, and dignity. We believe every person deserves to be seen, heard, and supported especially during times of hardship. We strive to meet people where they are, walking beside them with care and without judgment.

Our Story

Founded in 2019, GMRC emerged from the lived experience of our Founder, Kelly LeGrand. Her personal journey through hardship shaped the soul of this organization and continues to inspire our mission to this day.

GMRCMadison.org is here to connect you with the right people, organizations, and services to help you move forward.

A Message from Our Founder

Kelly LeGrand
Founder & Executive Director

“Someone once reached out their hand to me — and now I offer mine.”

I created GMRC because I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to feel broken, ashamed, and forgotten. I’ve carried the weight of hard choices. I’ve known what it feels like to believe no one sees you.

To anyone facing homelessness, hardship, or heartache:
I see you. I’ve lived it. I’m not here to judge — I’m here to help.

You never know what someone is going through. So please… just be kind.
You are not alone.
And no matter where you are today, always remember: you can grow.

What People Are Saying About GMRC

At GMRC, we believe support should feel real. Why?  because we’ve lived through real life struggles ourselves. We’ve been there, and that’s exactly why we show up for others. When you’ve walked the hard roads, you don’t just offer help you offer compassion and understanding.

Whether you reached out for help, referred someone, or worked alongside us in the community, your words remind us why this work matters.

Here’s what people are saying:

From Advocates, Caseworkers & Referrers

“I’ve referred a few moms to GMRC who were dealing with housing or job stuff. Every single one said they felt heard for the first time. One even told me, ‘I didn’t cry after I left, I felt like I had a plan.’ That’s not something I hear often, especially from people who’ve been shut down a lot.”

“When I don’t know what else to offer a client, I message Kelly. She’s the one I know will actually answer, even if it’s late or outside normal hours. And she doesn’t just send a link. She listens, asks what’s really going on, and finds a way to help.”

“We’ve worked with a lot of orgs, but GMRC is different. I had a client who was embarrassed to ask for help and almost canceled. Afterward, she said, ‘It didn’t even feel awkward. Kelly talked to me like a real person, like someone who’s been in my shoes too.’ That matters.”

From People We've Helped

“I was juggling a bunch of stuff, no car, trying to find work, kids at home, and I just felt stuck. I messaged GMRC not expecting much, but Kelly got right back to me. She even helped me figure out how to get to an appointment I was ready to cancel. And she followed up, which meant more than I can explain.”

“I’ve had so many places hand me a list of numbers and tell me ‘good luck.’ Kelly didn’t do that. She sat with me while I called places and helped explain stuff I didn’t understand. When I was nervous to make one of the calls, she said, ‘Let’s do it together.’ That made all the difference.”

“I reached out after seeing a post on Facebook. I almost didn’t because I hate asking for help. I always feel like I’m bothering people. But I’m so glad I did. Kelly made it feel like she was my best friend. Hearing her story helped me feel like I wasn’t alone. We’ve faced a lot of the same struggles, so talking to someone who gets it and is now helping others gave me hope.”

“I was having one of those weeks where everything was falling apart, bills, food, school stuff with the kids, all of it. Kelly didn’t act like she could magically fix everything, but she helped me take the next step and reminded me that I wasn’t doing it alone.”

From Community Partners

“I’ve worked in nonprofit and community work for years, and you don’t always know how things will go when you make a referral to someone. But when I send someone to GMRC, I know they’ll be treated with compassion, not judgment.”

“I had someone call me after their visit with GMRC, They said, ‘That’s the first time someone honestly helped me and didn’t judge my situation.’ Kelly stayed late, printed out forms, helped them make phone calls, and followed up a few days later. That’s just who she is as a helper. You can’t teach that.”

The thing about GMRC is that they’re not just a ‘resource place.’ They really care. You can feel it in the way Kelly talks to people, remembers names, follows up weeks later, and connects dots most agencies miss. I’ve sent people to her who were in really tough situations, and they always come back saying, ‘She actually helped.’ Sometimes we don’t even know about half the resources Kelly does — but she always seems to know just the thing.”

"Kelly’s known as the Queen of Resources and if you’ve ever worked with her, you know why. She doesn’t just hand you a list, she walks with you through it. She knows where to turn, and if she doesn’t, she’ll find out. That title’s not just a nickname, it’s earned”
